Ain Shams University, Cairo

Ain Shams University is one of the two largest universities in Cairo.



The epidemiology of viral hepatitis in Egypt is currently one of the major research activities of the department of Community Medicine. The department conducted two national surveys on HCV prevalence in collaboration with the Egyptian Ministry of Health. It has been involved in studies of HCV transmission, progression, and treatment in several international collaborations. The immunology laboratory was recently renovated and is now fully dedicated to hepatitis C research.


Prof. Mostafa Kamal, Professor of Epidemiology, initiated a collaboration with French researchers in 2001, and was the South coordinator of the ANRS site since its creation until he passed away in 2011. The department previously headed by Prof. Mohsen Gadallah and now by Prof. Wagida Anwar, has a large team of researchers composed of university staff, professors, assistant professors, teachers and young researchers: Prof. Diaa Marzouk, Drs Maha El-Gaafary, Amira Mohsen, Aya Mostafa, Waleed Saleh, Amany Abd El Hay.

Prof. Mona Rafik is an immunologist with long-standing experience in viral hepatitis studies. She coordinates a team of assistant professors and doctoral students in immunology in the newly renovated laboratory at Ain Shams University. Scientists from the immunology lab involved in the project are Rasha Mamdouh, Amal Abbas, Dina El Shinawy, Dina Aly and Walid Abdul Hady.
